Elections and the Parliamentary Elite in the Interwar Sekler Land (1919-1939)

Summary/Abstract: After the First World War, the region, lived in majority by Hungarians, calledSzékely Land became part of Greater Romania. The promise of the universal suffragegave the idea of a democratic Romania. In the interwar period, the Romanianelectoral system went through of numerous changes and at the end of the era the selfdefineddemocratic system was changed by a royal dictatorship. Inside Romania thefour counties from Székely Land was the electoral basis of the Hungarian nationalminority’s political group, the Hungarian Party and of the government party, whichused frequently electoral fraud to obtain the parliamentary majority. The study alongwith the presentation of the regional elections aims to analyze the political behaviorof the regional population group through the contemporary Romanian politicalsystem’s functioning in this region.
