No Censor’s Intervention. Fragment of an Unknown Novel by Eliza Orzeszkowa

Summary/Abstract: Presented is an edition of the surviving fragment, consisting of a few sheets, of the manuscript of an unknown novel by Eliza Orzeszkowa from the latter half of 1860s – i.e. the earliest stage of her activity as a writer. The subject-matter is repressive measures extended to the Polish society following the January Insurrection of 1863/4. This is the only known artistic piece in this author’s output that takes no care of the censorship considerations. The introductory essay attempts at reconstructing the circumstances and timeframe wherein the text in question was written, also offering an afterthought on its genre status, and making references to Orzeszkowa’s biography.
