Summary/Abstract: PML este o propunere de schemă XML [eXtensible Markup Language] pentru înregistrările catalografice. Metalimbajul PML propune o „gramatică” pentru metadatele cuprinse atât în cataloagele de bibliotecă, cât şi în cele de muzeu. Articolul se concentrează pe expunerea motivaţiilor sale şi pe sugerarea utilităţii lui practice. Trei factori au contribuit major la iniţierea acestui proiect: a) limitările formatelor bibliografice de tip MARC şi structurile prea simple ale bazelor de date muzeale, b) evoluţiile conceptuale pe plan mondial, mai ales impactul modelelor conceptuale FRBR şi CRM şi c) necesitatea elaborării unui model de date pentru cataloagele partajate ale bibliotecilor şi ale muzeelor din România. PML is a proposed XML schema for the catalographic records. The PML metalanguage suggests a grammar for the library catalogue as well as museum catalogue metadata. The paper focuses on its motivations and on its suggested practical utility. Three factors had a major impact on the initiation of this project: a) the limitations of the MARC-type bibliographic formats and the too simple structures of the museum catalogues, b) the conceptual developments in the world museum and library communities, mainly the impact of the FRBR and CRM conceptual models and c) the need for a data model for the shared catalogues of the libraries and museums of Romania.
