Summary/Abstract: The essay provides a short popular history of the library from an architect's point of view. How libraries form as a specific place from Antiquity till our digital today; how that space develops and to what extent remains unchanged; why and how we collect books; why, as private readers, we still need public spaces for books and reading; and how the reader's comfort seems the ultimate goal of the contemporary library spaces.
