Summary/Abstract: On the basis of archive sources and unpublished witness testimonies, the author documents hostile attitudes of the communist regime towards free personal contact of Catholic bishops in former Czechoslovakia with the Apostolic See, with respect to the figure of the ninth bishop of České Budějovice Josef Hlouch. It should be noted that if, during the period of political easing in 1968 and 1969, bishops were able to travel to Rome, their meetings with the Pope and the representatives of the Curia were mutually enriching. It was a meeting of two worlds, separated from each other by another, sometimes less impervious, “iron curtain”.
