Summary/Abstract: During the 19 th century many Bulgarian young people departed for European countries to obtain higher education. About 442 persons received academic degrees; half of them are physicians, military physicians and pharmacists. In different European cities, the Bulgarian physicians specialized in internal and infectious diseases, obstetrics and gynecology, urology and other fields. Their research topics concerned European science contemporary problems. Returning to their home towns the Bulgarian physicians were confronted with miserable standards of living, wide spread epidemics and other medical issues. They put many efforts in raising the health culture of the population. Many of them published articles in Bulgarian media in which commented the causes of some diseases and tried to build new hygienic habits, mainly as part of childcare.
