Geographical Approaches for Researching the Role of Cities in the Functional Organization of Space

Summary/Abstract: In this paper is given a chronological overview on the development of general scientific paradigm and theoretical and methodological bases that made some impact on modifying the perception of urban geography. Although these paradigm made a significant contribution in researching the complex dynamics and structure of cities, dualism in this field is still present. Scientific opinions polarization is observed between the approaches that embrace a pluralistic conception of relations in the region and those who insist on the need to create a unified theoretical framework due to the generally accepted doctrines. The paper also highlighted the role of cities in exploring the functional organization of space.
