Summary/Abstract: The creation of nodal regions and planning of their development is one of the basic prerequisites for accomplishing rational spatial organization. By affirmation of concept of polycentricity, as a desirable form of development being pursued in the area of Europe and the European Union, as well as in the world, the role and importance of functional urban areas has been emphasized. Accordingly, the aim of this paper is to design models for defining functional urban areas on the territory of Serbia, and which would be applicable to the settlement level. Reducing the level of research on the lowest territorial level (settlement) will allow much more accurate picture of the territorial scope of functional urban areas of urban centre of Serbia, and the percentage of the population that live in them in relation to the total state population. The research has indicated two main criteria for defining functional urban areas: daily migrations and isochronous. The model is verified on the example of Kragujevac.
