Summary/Abstract: The ambiguity of tautological utterances still poses problems in terms of predication. The present paper makes an attempt at analysing different types of tautologies to establish how meaning is created. Although such utterances may seem confusing at the surface, they are, as a rule, appropriately decoded by the interlocutors. The author argues that the ambiguity in tautological constructions is the result of the encounter between universal predication and subjective predication.
