Challenges of European Union regional policy

Summary/Abstract: Selected determinants of the implementation of EU regional policy in the years 2014–2020 are presented as issues of this publication. The attempt to explain the concept of “regional development” is taken in the first part of the article, based on selected approaches presented in national literature and Polish legislation. The differences of the development of EU Member States is analyzed in the further section. Two indicators are used to this: GDP per capita and a long-term unemployment rate. The period of 2006–2015 is covered by the analysis. However, the main aim of the article is to identify the main directions for changes in EU regional policy in the years 2014–2020 in the context of the European Union’s aspirations to strengthen economic, social and territorial cohesion. The carried out discussions highlight new changes, significant challenges and special constraints in the area of EU regional policy in the years 2014–2020. One of the obstacles is also identified, which may adversely affect the process of levelling the playing field in terms of development in the European Community (EC).
