Summary/Abstract: The article is an attempt to outline the process of establishing Poland’s diplomatic relations in the years 1918–1939 and defining the formal and legal solutions adopted at the time. Taking the recognition of the state after the end of World War I as the starting point, the author presents the source documents confirming that Poland’s international recognition did not automatically imply the establishment of diplomatic relations. Discussed will be the notion as well as practice of setting up diplomatic relations, both as a historical process and as a final effect, with research based on domestic as well as foreign sources.
