Summary/Abstract: This paper is an attempt to address the issue of gender differences of evaluative language in linguistic book reviews. The research was focused on three main aspects: firstly, the opening and concluding evaluations, secondly, attributes of the book that were evaluated, and, thirdly, evaluation markers and what value systems they presupposed. The findings suggested that both male and female reviewers preferred to start and finish their reviews with positive comments. Furthermore, reviewers of both genders tended to praise and criticise content-related issues most frequently. Moreover, they used global praise but precise criticism in order to mitigate the face-threatening nature of the review genre. The analysis of evaluation markers revealed that in terms of linguistic expression the disparity between male and female reviews was insignificant.
