Argumentative Text in the System of Text Types

Summary/Abstract: We have defined argumentative text in terms of text typology. The text type identification criteria have been discussed in the article; some subtypes of argumentation according to the mode of thinking (proof, deniai, confirmation, explanation...) have been analysed; the observation that argumentation can also be subdivided according to the needs of communication has been stressed - academic language explains, journalism argues, and fiction considers. It has been concluded that argumentation as a functional type of the text takes into account both the criteria (internal and external). Text typology is discussed as a hierarchical system. Three subtypes o f argumentation are presented: 1) proof, 2) persuasion, and 3) consideration. Consequently, argumentation text should deserve special attention of scholars since some linguistic means of expression conceal the shortcomings of logical argumentation, and argumentation as such becomes a social tool to impose speciai attitudes towards the society at large.
