Summary/Abstract: The small stage in the early 20thcentury was called the affiliated premises of the theaters. Later on, the performances began to be played in rehearsal spaces, in the theater lobbies, and other rooms not being theatrical venue sat first glance. The small stage has become a kind of a ground for creative searches based on mobility of the stage and hall boundaries and the closest possible contact with a small audience. Creative research in this format greatly diversified the repertoire and contributed to updating of actors’ technologies and figurative vocabulary of the Ukrainian theater in 80-90s’. One of the first performances in the small scene format, i.e. "The Tale on Monica" by S. Shaltyanisand L. Yatsinyavichus (Lesia Ukrainka Theatre of Russian Drama of Kyiv, 1978), evoke a great interest in the theater community. It was attracted by the brightness of director’sthinking, V. Malakhov, as well as passion and emotions of actors. The drama of the characters’ feelings, disclosed by performers of the main roles in a psychologically subtle way, was re-conceptualized in a non-standard manner due to the epic theater techniques. A bold imagination of the director was organically combined with the musical dramaturgy of G. Kupryavichus, vocal-choreographic language of B. Kamenkovych, and imaginative vision of the set designer V. Karashevskyi. In the second half of 1980, the small stages were opened in most theaters in Ukraine. The director of various generations followed a consensus as to the fact that the big repertory groups must be able to handle the search concepts in terms of a chamber scene.
