Attachment and parenting in incomplete families

Summary/Abstract: The clinical and empirical literature on attachment and parental style in incompletefamilies focuses on children whose parents work abroad, children whose parents divorced orchildren who lost a parent. Unfortunately, little research has been done on attachment and parentalstyle in incomplete families (parental migration, divorce and parental death). This article seeksto review previous studies and develop a general model of separation between children fromincomplete families. Four major topics are reviewed to develop an understanding of attachment andparental style in incomplete families: (1) psychological and economic consequences of parentalmigration; (2) divorce and its links to attachment style, well‑being and socioeconomic status (SES);(3) psychological and economic consequences of parental death; and (4) the comparison betweenparental death and divorce concerning children’s well‑being. The purpose of the article is to developa general model of parental separation regarding attachment and parental style.
