Summary/Abstract: The paper under the title "The primeval ornamental culture as a fundamental principle of abstract art" explores the origins of abstract art in Ukraine on the examples of the material and artistic culture of the primitive era. The object of the study is that abstract art as manifestations in simple geometric symbols and forms Paleolithic, Mesolithic, Neolithic, Chalcolithic is the oldest manifestation of human artistic activity and the first attempts of self-awareness and knowledge of the world. The purpose of the paper is to present the search of the first basic characters and symbols in abstract art. The author comes to the conclusion that primitive art in form and substance were abstract. Initial signs are abstract line, dot, cross, circle, square, triangle broadcast global historical connection, embedded in the memory of generations, embodied later in the ornamentation of folk decorative arts and contemporary artists use it in modern stage of abstract art for solve creative problems.
