Summary/Abstract: The article considers the question of reaction in circles of the Roman aristocracy to the social and cultural changes which have affected Gallia and Italy of the 5th century. On the example of the fate of the young aristocrat Parfeny it is shown how seriously the washing out of limits of social and cultural identity was taken in the Roman intellectual environment. It is proved that such aristocrats as Ennody saw the rescue of the Roman world from barbarization, first of all, in preservation of an antique education system and also in consolidation of family clans.
