Summary/Abstract: The aim of the work is caused by necessity of determining the adequacy of the use of «civic» or «ethnic» theory to the determinants of modern Ukrainian identity in Galicia and detailing of the transformation of the worldview of Austrian Galicia according to this Polish factor. Methodology. The methodology is the using of comparative and axiological methods in the studying of changes in intercultural contacts and knowledge of the values of a certain cultural community in their connection with an objective reality. Scientific novelty. The scientific novelty of the work consists in generalization of the main reasons for the victory of the Ukrainian identity among Galicians from the point of view of cultural studies, as a result of intercultural interaction. Conclusions. The Polish-Ukrainian confrontation in Galicia under Austrian bureaucracy played a key and positive role in the final assertion of Ukrainian identity. The period of oscillation of Galicia between the ways of the identity is first and foremost a struggle of public myths. Hrushevsky’s myth of «Ukraine-Rus» won the Austro-Russism with Pan-Germanism, Pan-Slavism of the Russian Orthodox and Polish reczpospolita «brotherhood».
