Summary/Abstract: The present exploratory study was aimed at investigating people’s every‑day self‑reportedemotions as well as the personal and lay people’s scientific criteria for emotions categorisationaccording to whether they were pet‑owners or not. Thus, 370 participants (Nmen = 197), withages ranging from 15 to 74 years (M = 32.65) reported the emotions they predominantly experiencedin their daily life, proposed lay‑categorization criteria for emotions and classified a list of40 pre‑established emotions according to their valence and the primary vs. secondary dimension.Overall, all participants reported positive emotions in their daily life. Interesting differences betweenscientific and lay‑categorization of emotions were observed. Finally, a significant impact of pet‑ownershipon people’s emotional state and criteria of defining and classifying emotions appeared.
