Regional capitals vs. their environment – trends in changes of employment sector structure

Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article is to evaluate the trends in changes of employment sector structure in Polish cities – regional capitals and their environment (neighbouring counties) in the period 2005-2014. The data collected from the Central Statistical Office (Local Data Bank) were used regarding the employment size in particular sectors (agriculture, industry, finance, trade and services) in the selected territorial units at NUTS 4 level – 18 cities representing administrative centres of Polish regions and 44 neighbouring counties. The modification of the measure for structure similarities was used in identifying the trends in changes, which allowed separating groups of cities characterized by – in terms of similarities – the approximating (9 cities) or the distancing (4) employment structure in the analysed period and the construction of forecast covering changes for the subsequent three years.
