Ambiguity and Paradox in Jaroslav Seifert’s Post-Avant-garde Work

Summary/Abstract: The author considers the possibilities of interpreting the post-Avant-garde works of Jaroslav Seifert (1901–1986). She starts from various essays by Zdeněk Pešat, Antonín Brousek and Alexandr Stich, and concludes that the interpretation of Seifert’s verse, in view of the open conception of his works, requires familiarity with the political events of the place and time in which Seifert was writing. Without this knowledge one will miss his political allegories.
