Summary/Abstract: This dissertation deals with an important moment (years 1878–1882) in Henryk Sienkiewicz’s personal as well as creative biography. The convictions he expressed owing to his stay in the U.S. have changed soon after his return home. The choice of a milieu, the search for a convenient venue for implementation of his artistic plans got clashed at that point against strictly financial demands, a need to get stabilised, especially given the perspective of his expected marriage. A tension between real-life necessities and ideological/aesthetic convictions was markedly expressed not only in Sienkiewicz’s writing output but also in his private correspondence (particularly, in his letters to S. Witkiewicz). This paper attempts at describing these .trials-and-tribulations. experienced by this author on the eve of the great success of his Trilogy historical novel cycle.
