Statistical methods of variables selection in linear ordering

Summary/Abstract: One of the major problems in the economic studies conducted by the methods of data analysis (including methods of linear ordering) is a selection of variables. This problem concerns the inclusion of variable low-resource information, omitted variables with high resource information or taking account of collinear variables. This can lead to an incorrect assessment of studied phenomena and making a wrong decision. In the literature there are presented two approaches to the selection of variables: substantive and statistical. The aim of the article is to present some statistical methods of variables selection that can be used in economic studies conducted by the methods of linear ordering and assessment of their effectiveness in the light of the correctness of generated rankings. In the analysis of the correctness of the rankings selected measures of quality assessment of linear ordering methods have been used. This study has used data on the rankings of academic institutions, a pllord package and R program.
