Yukio Mishima’s Fiction. The Memory of the Past, the Honor of the Present and the Truth of Art

Summary/Abstract: Considered by the literary critics as one of the most important representatives of the Japanese novel of the 20th century, Yukio Mishima (1905 – 1970) also wrote Kabuki and Noh plays and numerous essays. His novel entitled Temple of the Golden Pavilion (1956), regarded by many as his masterpiece stresses upon the significance of beauty in human existence, this idea being continued in his tetralogy, The Sea of Fertility (1965 – 1970), perhaps his last major achievement. As a writer, Mishima drew inspiration from pre-modern literature, both Japanese and Western, proving his force and literary gift in the field of a great family novel, as well as in that of the symbolic writings or autobiographical ones.
