Summary/Abstract: The founder of the Church entrusted the Church the teaching function. In 1588 Pope Sixtus V erected the Congregatio pro universitate studii romani to supervise the studies at the University of Rome and other notable universities of the time. Then the Roman Pontiffs created: the Congregatio studiorum, Congregatio de Seminariis et Studiorum Universitatibus, Sacra Congregatio pro institutione Catholica, and in 1988 Congregation for Catholic Education (in Seminaries and Institutes of Study). The Pope Benedict XVI changed in 2013 the name of the dycastery into Congregation for Catholic Education (Institutes of Study).
