Summary/Abstract: Research studies conducted at higher education institutions are diverse and full of contradictions. On the one hand, an interdisciplinary approach and cross-country comparisons are highly valued, on the other hand, studies are accused of being too local. The state of the discipline in different countries largely depends on institutional and historical circumstances. A certain discrepancy exists between rigorous scientific research and applied research, typical for the field of evaluation and prepared for the purpose of building academic self-knowledge or creating public policies. This paper takes a closer look at the functioning of such studies in practice and, on the basis of the literature, discusses their scientific potential and several challenges and barriers in achieving such goals. They are presented using the example of selected studies conducted at the University of Warsaw.
