Rising the competitiveness of destinations as a task of destination management organizations

Summary/Abstract: The primary objective of this article is to present the importance of competitiveness as a task of destination management organizations (DMO). A review of competitiveness definitions was made, at the same time emphasizing that this issue is quite differently understood in the scientific literature. Subsequently, a selection of scientific opinions about the importance of competitiveness for the tourism sector, especially for destinations was presented. The conducted analysis clearly showed that from the point of view of the development of specific areas, the issue of competitiveness was a priority. It was stressed that DMOs should play an important role in improving the competitiveness of destinations. Studies conducted among 184 European DMOs showed that raising the competitiveness of destinations was recognized as action of great importance.
