Summary/Abstract: This paper is devoted to the key concept of the communication field, which unites the professional social institution and its products. The objectives of the paper are as follows: firstly, to analyze the scope of the “journalism” concept in modern academic discourse; secondly, to introduce an algorithm for analysis of scientific views based on the SLR (Systematic Literature Review) method. As a result, a three dimensional model of the concept, which makes it possible to systematize further research efforts. Based on the analysis of 134 Russian papers published in 2015–2017 and accessed for free on the eLIBRARY.ru web site, we have analyzed the scientific views on the essence of modern journalism. The model of this concept seems to take the following shape: the social aspect is found at the horizontal level, the value based aspect occurs at the vertical level, which combines sense-forming, humanistically oriented, person centered, aesthetically harmonized activity aimed at processing and filtration of the information flow in the interests of development and strengthening of the society. Pan media outreach has been described as the major factor responsible for transformation of the understanding of journalism in the research field. The advance in SRL principles with respect to the Russian databases has been associated with the development of the culture of publishing, in particular with the increase in the size of abstracts, which completely reflects the main aspects of the paper, and the relevance of keywords.
