Ujević's Citatory Parting with Marulić

Summary/Abstract: The paper is a chapter from a larger whole devoted to the phenomenon of citation. Tin Ujević's poem Oproštaj (Parting) is interpreted within a theoretical framework that consists of two methodological figures applied in the study of citation (categorical citation triangle and categorical citation square), two universal types of citation (illustrative and illuminative citation), and two historically unique models of citation (the great citation polemic and the great citation dialogue). Like all avantgarde texts Ujević's poem Parting is a citation mystification of ortography, of the language and style of Marulić's Judita: viewed within the second methodological figure, the categorical citation square, the text is an individual form of the avantgarde citation dialogue realized in what may be regarded the specific Croatian, principally vertical and conservative national culture which was reluctant to accept the destructive challenge of the avantgarde without reservation.
