Summary/Abstract: The paper deals with the crucial issues of international expansion of Chinese companies. Due to the recent and significant growth of foreign direct investment (FDI) outflows China has become one of the major foreign investors in the world. We discover its scale, directions and main determinants that can help in better understanding the Chinese companies’ internationalization process. We point out that the investment patterns of Chinese firms are not in line with explanations derived from the theoretical framework of traditional FDI concepts. Therefore the new approaches should be tested. The unconventional FDI and the imbalance theory as well as the LLL model are both potentially interesting in this matter.
