Summary/Abstract: In the year 1999 the Czech Republic became a contracting state to the European Charter of Local Self-Government, an international treaty created by the Council of Europe. Its current form was preceded by almost 30 years of work on the establishment of a common European standard of local government. For the Czech Republic it meant making a commitment to creating domestic legislation corresponding to the mandatory requirements of the European Charter of Local Self-Government. It was impossible to accept its contents as a whole and therefore against certain demands reservations were made. This paper therefore deals with the practical implementation of mandatory requirements and reservations made by the Czech Republic.
