Summary/Abstract: While professional discourse analysts have contended to examine professional discourse adopting a constructionist perspective,Systemic Functional Linguistics and Critical Discourse Analysis researchers have adopted a sociological perspective for the interpretation of discourse, of the context of situation and the context of culture. Their perspective is grounded on social practices and Giddens’ structuration theory. One of the most relevant studies to stay proof of this turn in SFL is J.L. Meurer’s article ’Role Prescriptions,Social Practices, and Social Structures’. Based on Meurer’s (2004)views, the present paper seeks to bring to light the relationship beween social practices, social practice theory and discourse or text and to highligth the contribution SFL and CDA can bring to discourse or text analysis. To serve this purpose, the present paper is built on J. LMeurer’s views on the issue.
