Social Transformations in Sarmatian Society in the 1st Century AD

Summary/Abstract: The article studies the issue of transformation in the Sarmatian societies at the turn of eras and in the 1st century AD under the influence of migrations. The migration structure and its social consequences are analyzed. Migrations from the East are compared to each other on the basis of archaeological data and their influence over the Sarmatian society is defined. In the 1st century AD a new model of relations between the Sarmatians and settled world is formed, i. e. a model that relied on military force — cataphract cavalry and, possibly, used the practice of migration of individual groups of settled population. This social model of interaction between the nomad and the settled population was brought in by migrants from the Central Asia. Cultural innovations and social and political changes in the Sarmatian society in the 1st century AD and their reflection in archaeological material are studied.
