Summary/Abstract: The paper describes Polish experience with overcoming the communist past and its legacy.It deals with legal and social aspects of the lustration and decommunisation as well as attempts to punish communist perpetrators. Collective memory and remembrance, as well as changes in the symbolic sphere in the public space, are also discussed. Finally, the above-mentioned problems are placed in the international context, specifically in the Central European arena.
