Summary/Abstract: The idea of multiculturalism has become very confusing for many Europeans. Tensions connected with recent waves of mass migration, a backlash against multiculturalism and immigrants promoted by populist politicians raises irrational fears, and makes rational discussion very difficult. How does Australia define and implement multiculturalism as a social policy in one of the most multicultural countries in the world? This article argues that by understanding Australia’s successful example, other countries can find a basis for refining and focusing their own policies around cultural diversity, even at times of great disruption and fear of foreigners.
