An Overview of the Meanings of the Verb {czuć} and its Derivatives in the Old-Polish Period

Summary/Abstract: The article presents semantic relations between the verb {czuć} (‘to feel’) and its verbal derivatives: {czuć się, poczuć} i {uczuć}. Quotes excerpted from Słownik staropolski enabled the author to analyze the meanings and collocational properties of the basic verb. The analysis aims at determining the senses of the verb czuć that have been inherited from the Proto-Slavic period and stating to what extent the perceptual components of the verbs have been retained in Polish. The characteristics involves perceptual meanings connected with touch and smell, as well as other components, e.g. emotional or mental.
