Summary/Abstract: The dramatic change of authorities after the end of socialism in Bulgaria divested architecture of both its comfortable ideological setting and its public approval. As a result, the Bulgarian society is still not able to make its mind on the issue of the architectural heritage of the period. What should not be forgotten is that socialism had changed significantly a huge part of our living environment and, in fact, most of it today is a product of the socialist architecture. The article will offer reflections on the fate of the Bulgarian post-socialist city and will try to argue that the debate on the socialist monuments is in fact a debate on the future of our public space as we know it.
