Summary/Abstract: The protection of persons with disabilities in international law is regulated both by international treaties that comprise mandatory legal provisions, and by the „soft“ law which includes international documents that are not legally binding. Most of the human rights treaties do not explicitly deal with the status of persons with disabilities, but they guarantee the protection to all persons, without any distinction among them. Several treaties specifically pertaining to the protection of persons with disabilities have only recently been adopted. The most significant treaty of this kind is the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities adopted in 2006. At any rate, the „soft law“ enacted by the United Nations, the Council of Europe and the European Union regulates the protection of persons with disabilities in a more commendable and comprehensive way.
