Summary/Abstract: Final status talks for Kosovo resumed on May 4, and with a surprising new stance from the Americans, at least guardedly, in support of Serbia’s position.. At the conference, the prospect of conditional independence for Kosovo was mentioned. The comparison was made to Italy’s South Tyrol region. The Americans believe it may work in Kosovo, making the Northern Serb-inhabited parts of Kosovo autonomous in the same way the German-speaking people in the Tyrol are autonomous.
