Summary/Abstract: Against the backdrop of the processes common for the country, the article examines the characteristics of the charity work in Plovdiv the second largest city in Bulgaria. The rich empirical material makes it possible to trace the influence and role of the tradition of mutual assistance, organizational forms and models of assistance and the types of social institutions in the city typical of the Bulgarian national revival. The author makes a general analysis of the membership and governing body of the Plovdiv organizations, paying special attention to the participation of women. The predominant place of the secular element in public care; the lack of ethnic and religious division in support; the priority role assigned to the care of the young generation are derived as essential characteristics of public charity.
