Summary/Abstract: The image of Eastern Europe until the first half of the 15th century had been defined by the Byzantine imperial city of Constantinople. Being afterwards the capital of the Ottoman Empire, it represents the realm of oriental exoticism and picturesque. This paper is intended to focus on Romanian writings from the middle 19th century in order to investigate their way of representing a preset cultural framework of the Orient.
