Summary/Abstract: The archeological ensemble of the XIV-th century from Costeşti-Gârlea medieval city (Ialoveni district) is one of the most important medieval complexes in the Prut-Dniester area. The settlement from the Botna river meadow and the fortress to the north of the medieval town were introduced in the scientific circuit in 1924 by the historian Ştefan Ciobanu. Teodor Porucic carried out the first excavations in Costeşti in 1934. Surface archaeological investigations in the perimeter of the earth fortification in Costesti-Gârlea and in the related area were undertaken in the first post-war year by the archaeologist G.D. Smirnov. G.B. Fedorov carried out prospecting researches in 1950. Some explanations regarding the extent and the chronological and cultural framing of the archaeological ensemble from Costesti-Gârlea have been brought by Em. Rekman's research from 1954, carried out both in the urban settlement and in the eath fortress. Nicolae Chetraru carried out a surface archaeological research in 1956. The excavations and prospectings undertaken by L.L. Polevoi in 1957 and 1959 occupy a special place in the investigations at Costesti. The author presented the results of the research in two scientific reports, some articles and in a monograph. In 1978, E.N. Abyzova resumed the archaeological excavations in the settlement of the XIV-th century from Costesti-Gârlea. The investigator continued the investigations the following year, being carried out both in the craft sector and in the Botna meadow. In 1993, N. Telnov and T. Reaboi also executed archaeological rescue excavations in the medieval town of Costesti. N. Russev and A. Gorodenco carried out extensive archaeological researches in 2005, but their results were not valorized. The most recent archaeological investigations in the medieval settlement at Costesti-Gârlea were undertaken by the National Archaeological Agency in 2016. Thus, during the period between 1934 and 2016, nine campaigns of archaeological excavations were organized in Costesti. All of these researches, however, had a more rescue character, focusing on the exploration of complexes affected by landslides or various earthworks.
