Summary/Abstract: Since the 1950's, pre-emptive strike and preventive use of force have constituted the core of the defense doctrine of Israel. Elements of such military actions can be also found in the current Israeli warfare concept, in spite of as symetrization and changing character of the contemporary military threats. The presented paper attempts to distinguishes the pre-emptive strike and the preventive war. It analyses their theoretical objectives as well as the practical use by the Israel Defense Forces, based on several cases from the history of modern Israel.The author also attempts to evaluate military and political effectiveness of such use of force.
