Summary/Abstract: The present article presents the theoretical framework for the study of urban communities in modern cities. References to the most representative sources from urban anthropology, sociology and applied urbanism permitted to propose a definition of urban communities. The model “the city in three layers” (physical space, social relations, cultural values) helped to place these communities in the layer of social relations as they offer a platform for interaction and communication between citizens and other actors in the urban environment. In addition, it could be noticed the fact that urban communities adapt to the urban space, to the physical infrastructure of the city and influence the formation of values, emotions and feelings of its members. Therefore, we could track the correlation and interdependence with the other two layers. As main features, urban communities have proved to be autonomous, horizontal, with shared interests; their members possess social capacities of organisation, communication and conceptualisation. The present study serves as theoretical basis for the ongoing practical research.
