Summary/Abstract: This article presents the history and prerequisites of the formation and the first performances of the Ensemble of Moldovan Gypsies, whose creation dates back to 1972. The material is based on archival documents, as well as on the analysis of the reviews in the republican press. The ensemble was created after a certain resemblance to the theatre-studio „Romen” (Moscow), whose repertoire combines songs, dances, dramatic scenes and the storytelling genre. At the time of the creation of the Ensemble of Moldovan Gypsies (art-director Leonid Cherepovsky), several amateur dance groups from Moldova, among them “Prietenia”, “Vyntulets”, “Mioritsa”, and the State Folk Dance Company “Zhok”, included such dance performances as “Tsigenyaske”, “Dance of Bessarabian Gypsies”, “Gypsy Camp” etc. in their repertoire. The creation of the Ensemble of Moldovan Gypsies under the Moldavian Philharmonic can be interpreted, on the one hand, as the realization of a project that meets the immediate demands of the public, who were genuinely interested in the “gypsy theme”, on the other – it was an attempt to involve the Roma population in the cultural life of the Republic at state level.
