Armed Conflict in Donbas in the Years 2014/2015 – Internal Split or the Ukrainian-Russian War? Eventual Models for the Further Development of the Conflict

Summary/Abstract: In April 2014 in the Donetsk Coal Basin in Ukraine after an acute transition of the Ukrainian government and escaping of the President Viktor Yanukovych the wave of the pro-Russian protests began. These protests suddenly overgrew into the separatism and collaboration and the new Ukrainian government launched an anti-terror operation. This operation aimed to eliminating illegal militias formed among protesters, which stood for the federalization of Ukraine, for the autonomy or independence of the southeast Ukraine in the composition of eight oblasts and for the establishing strong ties with Russia in the framework of the Eurasian Customs Union. In addition, the aim of the anti-terror operation was to overturn control of the Ukrainian-Russian border in the Donetsk and Lugansk oblasts, which due to the pro-Russian manifestations was seized by militants. The anti-terror operation turned into a full-scale armed conflict that continues to the current day and it is not solved yet. Each of the parties of the conflict i.e. Ukraine and Russia put forward their own interpretation of the events and stand for their requirements. The aim of this paper is to present the rapid development of the separatist movement in 2014 in the south-eastern Ukrainian region with its further transformation into collaboration and armed confrontation.
