Summary/Abstract: In the anti-totalitarian allegory Rhinoceros, one can decipher both Ionesco’s reaction to the anti-Communist revolution in Hungary and to its echoes in France, and the re-actualization of some of the playwright’s memories of the right-wing totalitarianism in Romania at the end of the 1930s, and the beginnings of the 1940s. The present essay continues the series of Matei Calinescu’s analyses of Eugen Ionescu’s plays and their meaning, highlighting the writer’s biographical experiences.
