The Spanish Ambassadors Which Was Deployed in Ottoman Empire (1787-1912)

Summary/Abstract: The Catalonia Company’s arrival to Constantinople which was invited by the Byzantine Empire to stop Turkish progress was the beginning of Turkish-Spanish relations. Although there were some Spanish volunteers who joined the Crusades such as Nicopolis which were formed after the development of the Ottoman Empire in Europe, the relations between two countries started to escalate between the late 15th century and early 16th century. During the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent and V. Carlos, the competition between two countries increased dramatically and though the wars between both powers which ended from time to time lasted until the last quarter of 16th century. After the truce that was made in 1578, relations weakened and both countries started to deal with their own internal problems. With the treaty of alliance and commercial in 1782, the Ottoman-Spanish relations raised continuously. Spain, who wanted to have a say in Mediterranean, sent delegates to Istanbul and opened many embassies to trade and establish political relations with the area. It is possible to get more information from Ottoman archive documents about the name of Jerusalem, Alexandria, Aleppo, İzmir, Thessaloniki ambassadors which was appointed to trade centers and also the dates of their appointment, the reasons of their resignation.
