Summary/Abstract: The famine crisis that swept across the inhabitants of the North Albanian regions showed up in 1922, went on during 1923 and reached its climax in the first half of 1924. About 200.000 inhabitants of North Albania were touched by this heavy humanitarian crisis. The political borders that were imposed to Albania in 1913, the destructions and requisitions done by the fighting forces during World War I, the occupation of North Albania by the Serbian army in 1920-1921 and the decision of the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes to close the border to Albania were the main reasons of this crisis. The British government treated seriously the humanitarian crisis of North Albania. It offered a sum of 5.000 Pound Sterling and urged the other countries of the Council of the League of Nations to contribute in helping Albania. The serious engagement of the British government had to do with humanitarian motives but also with its political interests in Albania. Till June 11th 1924 a sum of 16.535 pound sterling was raised to help Albania. The aids distribution in the areas affected by the famine crisis began on July the 5th and it ended on August the 16th 1924. An amount of 990.075 kilograms of maize was distributed to the inhabitants of the Western Albanian regions and an amount of 244.000 kilograms of maize was distributed to the inhabitants of the North-Eastern regions of Albania. Due to the offered assistance by the League of Nations a considerable number of people in North Albania made it to survive.
