Summary/Abstract: The boundaries of different countries all around the world are diminishing in significance, bringing peoples and cultures closer, thus raising communication to the highest development levels. The globalization phenomenon, the desire and will to be integrated in the global development processes, and the invention of the internet, have all led to the need for a common language to best maximize communication. And it does not come as a surprise that English is the language to enable such a global communication, sometimes described as a ‘lingua franca’. “English is the third most natively spoken language in the world after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish; it is the most widely spoken language across the world and over a billion people speak English to at least a basic level; The growing economic and cultural influence of the US and its status as a global superpower since World War II have significantly accelerated the language’s spread across the planet.”
